People frequently refer to me as organized to a fault, meticulous and yes, a bit type A. My secret to staying on top of deadlines and appointments is not a photographic memory. Rather, it’s a humble 6in x 8in paper planner.

The Guardian’s journalism is independent. We will earn a commission if you buy something through an affiliate link. Learn more.

My love affair for physical planners started in elementary school, when I dutifully scheduled my days using a classic spiral-bound agenda.

Nowadays, in the office, Google Calendar’s (or God forbid, Teams’) sterile interface has replaced the brightly colored, thick planners once found on every student’s desk. I’m still partial to the latter. In fact, I think everyone with a pulse and a calendar app would benefit from a physical planner.

My favorite daily planners at a glance

    Papier

In The Grid A5 Academic Planner 2026/27

    Reading Journal

    from $25.60

For four years, I’ve relied on ones from Papier, the stationery brand behind whimsical notebooks such as the Desk Doodles productivity planner. As an undergrad student, its academic planner helped me manage my hectic schedule with its built-in assignment plans that log grades and feedback. And I’ve already shared my love for its reading journal – which is an alternative to Goodreads that doubles as a time capsule of the books you’ve read.

Sure, it’s not as convenient as the calendar app on your phone, but a daily planner offers a relaxing ritual to map out your day without the inevitable buzz of a notification.. And, with analog back in vogue, this is yet another way to lower your screen time.

You may say you’re “not a physical planner person”, as a friend recently told me. I suspect people assume that owning one means you must retire your digital calendars altogether. But Google Calendar acts as my “big picture” schedule, where I’ve filled in meetings and stretches of vacation. The daily planner helps me to zoom in on daily tasks as specific as “cook pasta for dinner.”

And it simply looks great on my desk. Made in collaboration with the clothing brand Damson Madder, it has a rich chocolatey brown cover sprinkled with light blue polka dots.

Each page of Papier’s planner helpfully divides your day into three chunks. The “Schedule” section allots 27 slots on the left side of the page to meticulously time block your day. Here is where I pencil in the yoga class I need to remember I signed up for (or risk paying a $10 charge), work meetings and social plans.

“Today’s Priorities” has just three bullet points, so use them wisely. I write my most essential, time-sensitive tasks in this section. Over the past few weeks, that included my flight to Japan, a work deadline, and of equal importance: a screening of The Odyssey in 70mm.

Finally, with 15 bullet points, “To Do” is my chance to brain dump the smaller tasks I hope to complete. Last week, items included everything from “pay electric bill” to “book campsite.”

And, because I’m a Real Adult, I write with my glittery blue ballpoint pen. Recently, I’ve been partial to the Japanese brand Sakura’s Tira model (part of my Tokyo shopping haul), but this option is easier to find in the US.

Gelly Roll Retractable Gel Pens (pack of 10)

    from $16.99

This has all saved me from my own forgetful brain. Recently, I was preparing to head home from work when I decided to double-check my to-dos from that morning. To my horror, I had missed sending one of my most vital emails of the day , a task I would never bother logging in Google Calendar.

Up next on my never-ending quest to organize my life? Well, Papier apparently offers a Financial Planner too, and no amount of writing “save money” in my planner has yet amounted to extra dollars in my bank account.
