The jolt of pre-programmed alarm sounds that come with most smartphones is upsetting enough to swear off alarms altogether. After doing an obsessive amount of research on alarm clocks that could make crack-of-dawn wake ups a little more bearable – and even enjoyable – I landed on the Hatch Restore Sunrise Alarm Clock five years ago. Since then, my husband and I have delicately woken up to the sound of birds and wind instruments, better rested than ever before.

Given the Hatch’s viral popularity – it’s now in its third iteration – I’m not the only one who loves it. If you, too, have been looking to do away with an unsightly device on your nightstand that incites more nightmares than sweet dreams, the Hatch Restore 3 Sunrise Alarm Clock is now 20% off on Amazon for Prime Day, the cheapest it’s been in months. The deal ends today.

    Restore 3 Sunrise Alarm Clock

    $135.99

Why do I love the Hatch alarm clock?

The allure behind the Hatch Restore is that it’s not an alarm clock in the typical sense. It’s an entire sleep solution, helping you both fall asleep and wake up easily, or at least easier than what you might be used to.

What sets it apart from utilitarian counterparts is its design: a sculptural crescent that glows in the morning like the sun peeking above a horizon, pretty enough to look at even when not in use. Through its companion app Hatch Sleep, you can program sounds such as “meditative flute and “wind chimes”, allowing for a more pleasant way to face the day. You could spend hours parsing through the app’s entire library to settle on a sound you wouldn’t mind listening to first thing in the morning or last thing at night. The idea is that its gentle sounds and lights mimic the sunrise or sunset, which are supposed to reset your circadian rhythms for improved sleep quality and daytime alertness.

While I haven’t officially tested my cortisol levels since making the switch to Hatch half a decade ago, I have no morning anxiety to report during my daily 6:45am wake up to the hum of birds and clarinets. Its white noise feature has also become a godsend, allowing my then newborn to melt into a deep sleep while drowning out the whir of traffic and barking dogs on the main street outside our bedroom window. Paired with my favorite sleep mask, I’m the best-rested new mom this side of the northern hemisphere.

Instead of doomscrolling, which has never been conducive to anyone’s restful night’s sleep, I also appreciate its phone-free unwinding routines, running the gamut from “Meditations for a Racing Mind” to “Moonlight Jazz”. To access the full inventory, though, you’ll need to shell out $6.49 a month after a seven-day trial or $60.99 a year after a 30-day free trial. (Personally, I don’t feel the need to pay to get so bored I fall asleep – I just listen to my dear husband talk about his knife skills for that, and I then manage to drift off like a baby.)

The Hatch Restore 3 is currently 20% off on Amazon.
